Timberline Lodge
North America’s longest ski season
North America’s Longest ski season: Timberline Lodge
Where can you ski all year round without leaving the continent and still ride a chairlift to do it? Look no further than Oregon’s stunning Mount Hood! Located less than two hours East of the vibrant city of Portland, Timberline is one of 5 ski resorts on Mt. Hood and boasts a whopping 4,540 vertical feet of runs in the Winter (unofficial stat, includes three let out trails to nearby Government Camp and a snowcat ride to the Summit), and has a glacial chair open during the Summer that offers between 700-1,524 vertical feet of skiing.
A normal season at Timberline Lodge starts in November and usually runs through the end of May. In June Timberline converts to honoring the Summer Pass, or All Season Pass, and continues operations on the Palmer Glacier through the end of August or first week of September. September is maintenance month, and October can see the lifts come to life again if early season snowfall permits. With 9-10 months of continuous snow skiing, Timberline Lodge has the longest ski season in North America.
summer Ski Operations
When the temps heat up, and the snow starts to melt, Timberline has a simple and effective plan to keep its patrons skiing long after other ski areas have thrown in the towel. That plan is “up” just keep going up! Timberline has a secret weapon in it’s arsenal that few other resorts have, and that’s an extra chairlift, that lays dormant all Winter, with chairs removed, towers getting battered by storm after storm, until the sun peaks out in late Spring and it’s time to string her up again. That chairlift, which accesses a snowfield by the same name is called Palmer and was named after Oregon pioneer Joel Palmer. Palmer serves two Black Diamond runs to Skiers Left of chair as well as a Summer Park area and a soft border to the right has some off-piste skiing and riding opportunities.
Lift TIckets
Timberline sells daily lift tickets at the ticket window in the day lodge for $97. No reservations required and tickets do not sell out. Timberline is also a part of the Powder Alliance and honors reciprocation from it’s member passes during the Winter and Spring seasons. Timberline sells a Winter “Fusion Pass”, as well as a Spring Pass and Year Round Summer inclusive pass.
Transportation
Beware the parking lot!! Especially during the Winter Season, and pretty on weekends all year round, Timberline’s slopeside parking area can fill up fast. Make sure to head up as soon you can to avoid missing a spot. Timberline also runs shuttles from Government Camp during peak season and the city run Mt. Hood Express runs from nearby Sandy every couple of hours
Amenities
Timberline’s Day Lodge has a small pub and food court open daily during peak season and weekends for the Summer, and the Timberline Lodge building has a choice of 2 different bars and a sit down restaurant. But nothing beats the parking lot scene at Timberline when the sun is out. Many rowdy skiers and snowboarders turn to tailgating and the “Car Bar” scene is in full effect..
