What is Glacier Calving?
A Glacier is a large thick mass of ice and snow that moves slowly. Glaciers form when a pack of snow and ice become heavy and large enough to move under their own weight. Glacier Calving is a phenomenon that happens when glaciers start to heat up from the changing seasons, and often break apart in huge chunks and fall into the water.
In Tahoe, due to the abundant snowfall, large glaciers can form in the mountains, and as the Spring temps warm the snow, large chunks of that snow and ice often slide down into the lake and are so big that they float on the surface of the water.

Glacier Calving Season in Lake Tahoe is very fleeting, and is typically only in April, which is one of the slowest months for tourism in Tahoe, hence why many tourist have yet to witness the natural phenomenon for themselves.
As the warmer temps and sun begin to melt the snow from the ski areas and mountains surrounding the lake, large chunks of it channel down into the lake and float on the water’s surface and begin the calving process. Glacier Calving can usually be witnessed in Lake Tahoe between April 1st, and April 31st most years.
