Woman stuck on Tahoe Gondola overnight
-A Tahoe tourist, briefly reported as missing, ends up spending the night on Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Gondola.
Woman spends the night on Heavenly Gondola
A foreign tourist named Monica Lazo came to South Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly Mountain Resort this week and planned to snowboard with several of her friends on Thursday, January 25th. Being a less experienced snowboarder, Monica fell behind at some point in the day, and got separated from her friends.
Just before 5pm, Monica reportedly boarded the top station of Heavenly Mountain’s gondola, intending to ride back down to the village, only for the gondola to stop shortly after she boarded, where she was subsequently stuck for the next 15 hours and not able to get off until the ski lift was started again on the morning of the 26th.
Stuck on a ski lift
As reported by the Tahoe Daily Tribune, Monica’s friends sprang into action on Thursday night, when their friend did not return from the ski area that evening. Friend Astro Mila supposedly spoke with employees of the ski area, posted on social media photos of Monica and eventually called local police to report her friend missing.
Monica apparently did not posses a cell phone when the gondola shut down for the day, and was not able to call for help when she became stuck, although according to an interview by Sacramento’s KCRA’s News, she repeatedly yelled out the window of the gondola cabin, but was too far away from passerby’s to be heard.
Despite spending 15 hours overnight in the gondola cabin with a low temp of 23 degrees, Monica was able to get off in the morning of the 26th when the lift began running again, and reportedly declined medical treatment. The incident is currently under investigation by both resort officials and local authorities.
